Striated Pardalote

Striated Pardalote, originally uploaded by cnlizziebns.

I have never seen this tiny bird on my property previously and have been graced with two of them. They are so unafraid and are making themselves at home in the stables, eating the grain with the stallion.

Its a beautiful bird and photograph. They build nests in the ground don't they.We had some years ago build a nest in a pile of earth.

Diane I looked up the information on this little bird as did not know it made its nests in the ground....the information about the nests in the ground is correct BUT no one told these two as have discovered their nest.....in a small knot hole in a tree trunk used for a post holding up one of the sheds. I thought they were so tame and they were probably trying to peck me as am always standing in front of their front door!!!

Here am I thinking you are so nice to me when really they were saying get out of our space or I may launch you great hulk!!!!ahhh us humans it is all about us is it not...

Tazar,

It is wonderful to see (read), you are still around...I am not obviously proactive but do appreciate the insights and golden moments of many of you in this medium.

And yes now that you mention the fact the little fellow does look like a painted egg on sticks!!

I will post a side view as enjoy having this pair around. Have read they are common but this is the first time I have seen the little fellows and certainly have not been common in this area. These little fellows have a big voice I must say.....I do enjoy the birds....

Margaret,

I agree it is so pretty and am so glad they have decided to raise a family close by.....I threw some grain into a knot hole in a post under the shed as thought they seemed to be in the area quite a bit and an indignant little bird popped up its head....after Googling they eat insects so guess the grain thing was like throwing huge rocks at it!!!
