An Insomniac ....Fingal and the Giants Causeway

Have not blogged for some time, have been looking after my mother and when I get away I usually hike in a National Park and have been visiting some beautiful and sometimes less travelled locations in this corner of the world ...some of the sights & sounds take my breath away.  I usually leave at midnight and travel to the spot I wish to be at dawn and watch the sunrise.....Have always been a night owl so it suits me and do not sleep well either so instead of being the insomniac on the Internet have been the insomniac on the highways and bush....:))  take the images home with me...

Some of my more recent efforts are below...

This is Fingal Head at sunrise where I have played with the images from this location as standing on the edge with the salt and wind blowing in my face put me in mind of the place where I imagined the elves would have sailed at the end of Lord of the Rings...

I had never been to Fingal before and was hearing the booming and crashing of the surf against the rocks and as it was dark took some shots on the head overlooking Cook Island so that before I ventured out on the cliff face I would get a little more daylight to check the footing...

The big breakers would rush over this rock formation and the water would cascade from the rocks in the most beautiful manner..  The morning was full of delicate colour because of the broken cloud cover and I have enhanced this somewhat as was feeling in a fantasy mood.

As I was changing positions with my camera I spied this surfer who jumped off these rocks into the most enormous swells and he paddled calmly out to the break which was to the left of this image

I moved up later in the day to Byron and took shots on sunset and this was another timed exposure at Little Wategos Beach which is below the Byron Lighthouse.

As I was taking the images here a couple of backpackers who were sitting on the beach enjoying the evening spied a number of dolphins swimming about where the second wave is breaking and with great glee dived into the water trying to swim with the dolphins who to me seemed to be enjoying themselves teasing the swimmer.  When he would get within yards of the dolphins they would wizz off to the other end of the beach and wait until he swam towards them and then wheel about out of reach and interaction.  I think the dolphins were laughing their heads off as I was....nicely it was so funny.  Would not catch me swimming here just on dark when the noahas arcs are usually prowling about at sundown...

The headland below the Byron Bay lighthouse, do not ask me how I climbed over this little lot...

Wategos Beach on the sheltered side of the above crashing waves headland and you can see a lone surfer on the upper left hand corner of this image, again this is a long exposure of over a minute or so

More rocks

The lighthouse in the late night darkness doing its thing...
I thoroughly enjoyed having a look about at the coast mainly in the dawn and dark...related to a vampire but love these iconic spots deserted, I think they belong to me which they do for a very short time.

So good to see you blog again. Your photo art is fabulous. I am so envious and wish I could make such good shots. I need to learn a lot more about settings and photo shop....one day.

What can I say... WOW and double WOW! Your photos in this post are just magnificent. Like Diane, I too am envious. Which goes to show that no matter where you are you can take amazing shots if you have the talent.

Diane,
I feel guilty as had meant to get down there with a few of the other photographers who would love to pass on a few tips.....I unlike you am not a good teacher but do have friends who are very good at imparting their knowledge and love to share...so will organize sometime in the future. I was climbing the pyramids in Girraween national Park and hurt my knee so am not doing such active or hard hikes and anyway is getting a little hot now as the winter is wonderful for the hiking on the mountains....I am mindful of a day...that both of us are free...was thinking some time in November....:)))will keep in touch. Your composition and eye for putting an image together is great...just a little tweaking with contrast and saturation as the camera does not have the complex optics of the human eye....Cheers, Lizzie
