Channel 9 News Photo...February 8, 2009

by the extreme weather conditions in Australia today...and Deepest Sympathy to those families who have lost lives in the inferno, the sadness I feel with all Australians as each time the news breaks reveal a rising death toll. The houses damaged and lost in the floods of North Queensland and the fires of Victoria.....I as do I am sure all Australians are hoping for the predicted weather change tonight.

Karumba ...I have just spoken to my brother who lives at the Point and the water has not damaged his property but the water goes about 10 ks inland on Delta Downs Station. My brother left his bike in storage at Townsville and hitched a ride on the mine's plane landing at Karumba where the airstrip is just through his back fence roughly.

I just have to put up a photo of the town I was born in...... most of my closest relatives live in these small Gulf communities of Karumba and Normanton.

Diane, I can not think of anything more terrifying than being caught in this inferno.

It's just heartbreaking to watch this tragedy unfold. As always in such things amazing stories of survival and wrenching loss. Our Emergency Services are fantastic.

I think I would rather face flood and cyclone than a huge wall of fire, the terror of last night for so many is unimaginable. Whole towns have just ceased to exist, fire destruction is so final.

I was doing housework today and sat down to have lunch. I turned on the TV and saw the news about the fires - not so far from where Lorna and I live, but we are'nt in a very dangerous area. Whittlesea, Diamond creek Kilmore Bendigo etc. My heart was in my mouth - Lorna was at work in Diamond Creek. I called her mobile - no answer but not unusual since she wouldn't be able to use her mobile except during her break. If she was in trouble, I am not likely to here from her, because she would be helping to get the nursing home residents to safety if possible.

I kept trying to ring her anyway and finally she answered. Luckily the fires were nowhere near where she was. Sigh of relief. Who ever said the Dunn's are unlucky?

I can understand the fear that people with friends and relatives are feeling not knowing what's happening to them.

I also feel so bad about the poor wildlife killed by these fires, and even worse for those that have survived badly injured and must suffer only to die or live the rest of their lives maimed.

I was called into the hospital to do some special cleaning due to some cases of gastro tonight. When I was leaving work about 8:30pm, the sky was red from the sun being refracted through all the smoke in the sky.

The worst of it all is this is probably not the end of it, at least tgose of us that live close to open grassy areas like Lorna and I have at the back of our property. Kids light grass fires every year here, and it is usual for somebody to suffer loss of property.

Sorry to be so long winded.

It is just so devastatingly sad. We are watching the late night reports even now. The deaths are climbing and I feel so so awful.

The world has gone mad.

Not one was untouchable through the wrath of this fire...It`s just too devastating to comprehend and to think worse than Ash Wednesday....I sat and watched people tell of their horrifying stories and it brought tears to my eyes....

My goodness how terrible those fires are. I haven't really kept informed because I don't really watch the news. When I turned the television on this morning while I was still laying in bed is when I saw them and how bad they are. I'm so sorry for all who are caught in them. Tragic!
